Program description

Information Technology (Cybersecurity), BS

As organizations increasingly rely on interconnected digital systems, the demand for professionals equipped to protect information technology infrastructure continues to grow across both public and private sectors. The Bachelor of Science in Information Technology, with a concentration in Cybersecurity, prepares students with the academic and technical foundation needed for a career in IT security. The curriculum is built around technologies used in today's business environments, giving students a thorough grounding in system orchestration, network forensics, configuration management, security analysis and risk assessment, and cloud and mobile security. Students build these skills through industry-designed coursework and hands-on practice in a virtual cybersecurity lab, preparing them for careers in the field; the program is accredited by ABET's Computing Accreditation Commission.
Curriculum

Featured courses

Middleware Programming and Database Security

Covers the main concepts of middleware technologies. Includes the various methodologies used to integrate applications, databases and Web services. Students develop multilevel applications using programming/scripting languages (such as PHP, Java, Python, Perl) which access data stored in a database. Middleware programs typically control database access and protect database SQL programs from security breaches. Students access the data from applications and other Web technologies such as XML, as well as protecting the data from unauthorized access.

Security Analysis

Processes used in cyber security analyses. Presents techniques through exercises to ensure confidentiality, integrity and availability. Includes vulnerability assessments based on faulty software design. Explores malicious code and computer crime, including operating system (OS) root kits. Instructs students in how to conduct analyses in support of cyber security initiatives.

Security Compliance for Information Technology

Focuses on development of security policy, risk solutions and incident response facilities. Using the information security framework, identifies strategies and processes used in governance, risk management, asset management, human resources and physical security to create, evaluate and audit security policies.

Career opportunities & applicable roles

Demand for information security professionals is increasing because of the need to create innovative solutions to prevent hackers from stealing, changing or destroying information and technology infrastructures. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment of information security professionals is projected to grow 29% from 2024 to 2034; the median annual wage for an information security analyst in 2024 was $124,910 ($60.05 an hour). There is a significant shortage of cybersecurity professionals around the globe, and ISC2 research states that about 500,000 of the three million open positions are located in North America. Graduates can pursue careers in cybersecurity analysis, cloud security engineering, security architecture, and red or blue team ethical hacking.
