Program description

Computer Science (Big Data Systems), MS

This on-campus program offers rigorous, research-driven training in building systems that can manage data at scale, preparing graduates to push forward innovation in data science and engineering. Unlike the more industry-oriented Master of Computer Science, the Master of Science in Computer Science with a concentration in Big Data Systems emphasizes fundamental and applied research, giving students the opportunity to generate new knowledge and technology in data-intensive computing through either a thesis or a nonthesis portfolio option. Students build expertise in designing parallel, distributed, and real-time systems for acquiring, storing, processing, and accessing large and varied datasets, while learning to apply advanced analytical methods and choose the right data management and processing frameworks for both structured and unstructured data.
Curriculum

Featured courses

Database Management System Implementation

Implementation of database systems. Data storage, indexing, querying, and retrieval. Query optimization and execution, concurrency control, and transaction management.

Distributed Database Systems

Distributed database design, query processing, and transaction processing. Distributed database architectures and interoperability. Emerging technology.

Data Mining

Advanced data mining techniques: classification, clustering, association, preprocessing; performance evaluation; information assurance, Web mining, security and privacy issues, and other applications. Students must have a solid background in database management systems, search, learning and statistics to be successful in this course.
